KUALA LUMPUR: The wagyu beef menu served during the first day of the 14th Parliament sitting was prepared only for eight VIPs at the main table, confirmed Parliament corporate communications secretary Tengku Nasaruddin Tengku Mohamed.
The ‘fancy’ menu which would cost between RM1,500 to RM2,000 per kilogram sparked controversy on social media.
Tengku Nasarudin also said the wagyu beef was not priced at RM2,000 as reported and the order for it was not placed by the management of the Parliament.
“The menu was an additional menu prepared by the caterer to celebrate the appointment of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof,” he told the media.
Tengku Nasarudin reiterated the Parliament only approved an allocation of RM50 per head which totalled up to RM400 for eight guests.
Among the 8 guests served with the ‘special’ menu were Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Muhamad Ali, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the Speaker.
