KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Najib Razak has denied that RM470 million in his personal account which he used to fund Barisan Nasional (BN) parties came from 1MDB.

“My conscience is clear. It is not 1MDB funds because as far as I know, when we issued the cheque, we were very clear that it didn’t come from 1MDB,” he said at the Parliament lobby today after being surprised with a birthday celebration given by his supporters. He turned 65 today.

Asked on the source of the funds, Najib declined to reveal any name as the case was under investigation.

“That is subject to investigation (so I) cannot say. The source of funds must be established very clearly.

“Let the investigations run their course as we don’t want to pre-empt whatever the findings are,” he said.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang last week said that BN component parties which received money from Najib had to return it if it came from 1MDB.

According to Malaysiakini, the money was disbursed from Najib’s account to Barisan Nasional coalition partners, including Umno, MCA, Gerakan, SUPP, Upko and other parties between April 2012 and August 2013.

Umno reportedly received the largest portion of the funds – RM417.4 million (88.8%) – followed by MIC (RM20.55 million) and MCA (RM16.5 million).
