KUALA LUMPUR: The head of the Special Branch, Mohamad Fuzi Harun, has been appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) effective today, replacing Khalid Abu Bakar.

He takes over the position from Khalid, who is now officially retired from service.

The announcment on Fuzi’s appointment was made during a hand-over ceremony at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol), here, today.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also home minister, attended the ceremony.

The appointment of Fuzi, who became Special Branch chief in July 2015, is a direct promotion. Noor Rashid Ibrahim, 59, remains the deputy IGP.

Prior to his appointment as Bukit Aman’s Special Branch director in July 2015, Fuzi gained vast experience in counter-terrorism, especially from his years as director of the Special Task Force on operations and counter-terrorism.

He was also the acting deputy IGP after Mohd Bakri Zinin retired on Sept 5, 2014.

However, he became Bukit Aman management director when Noor Rashid was appointed deputy IGP in December last year.

With Fuzi’s departure from the Special Branch, Bukit Aman Narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID) director Mokhtar Mohd Shariff has been named the new Special Branch chief.

It was previously reported that Mokhtar, who was also the former Johor police chief before heading NCID in March 2015, is due to retire soon.

Meanwhile, in recognition of his service, Khalid will be honoured with a special parade, scheduled for 2.30pm at the Pulapol parade grounds.

Khalid, who is from Seremban has been in the force for 40 years, first serving as an inspector from December 5, 1976 before moving up the ranks.

Among the important posts he had held were as Negri Sembilan police chief (2005), federal CID deputy director (2006), Selangor police chief (2007), director of Internal Security and Public Order (2010) and deputy IGP (2011).

Khalid was appointed Inspector-General of Police on May 17, 2013, succeeding Ismail Omar, who had come to the end of his service contract.

Noor Rashid was named deputy IGP on Dec 3, 2014.
