GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will investigate a woman's claim that she was charged RM80 for a meal of four dishes for two.
Its acting director Mohd Nor Musa said although there was no report lodged, the matter had been widely reported on social media and the newspapers.
“We will conduct a check at the stall to see if the allegation was true.
“We don’t allow traders to overcharge their customers,” he said Tuesday.
Mohd Nor advised the public who are unhappy with food prices charged by traders to lodge a complaint to the ministry for action to be taken.
“We conduct routine checks but we also need the cooperation of the public to provide us with information,” he said.
On claims that the economy rice operator did not label the prices of the food, Mohd Nor said that it was wrong under the law.
A woman, known only as Lim from Kulim, Kedah, had claimed that she was charged RM80 for two pieces of stingray in a curry, a bowl of curry with long beans, tau pok with cockles, a plate of bean sprouts, a plate of coagulated pig’s blood and two plates of white rice.
She was having lunch with her husband near a temple in Jalan Pasar at about 12.30pm on Sunday.
However, the food operator, known as Ah Mao, has denied the allegation.
