OVER 140,000 motorists were captured on camera for speeding or beating the red light over the past three months.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the summonses had been issued since the implementation of the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) on April 15.
“A total of 142,135 notices of summons were issued under Awas.
“Of this, 12,354 were for motorists who beat the red light while 129,781 were issued summonses for speeding,” he said in a written reply to a question by Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PAS Pokok Sena) in Dewan Rakyat.
He added that some 7,258 motorists had received points under the Awas demerit system.
Presently, Liow said there were 21 Automated Enforcement System cameras (AES) operating under Awas.
He noted that Perak had eight AES cameras, three in Kuala Lumpur, two each in Putrajaya, Selangor, Johor and Terengganu and one each in Kelantan and Kedah.
Awas is the amalgamation of the demerit system under the Traffic Offences System (Kejara) and AES network of cameras.
Under Awas, traffic offenders captured by the AES would be issued summonses of between RM150 and RM300.
Motorists who accumulate a maximum 20 points under the demerit point system may either be issued warnings or have their driving licences suspended or revoked.
