KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia is taking cyber threats even more seriously with the issue now placed under the National Security Council (NSC), Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said.
He said the NSC will monitor such threats with the relevant agencies including CyberSecurity Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“This is a multi-agency approach and reflects how serious we view cyber threats,” he told reporters at his Hari Raya open house late Saturday.
He said with cyber threats becoming more frequent, the authorities have to stay ahead of the criminals by harnessing the latest knowhow and technology.
“We have to find ways to continuously overcome these threats but the public must also do their part by being careful when going online,” Salleh added.
It was reported that 12 Malaysian firms could have been affected by the WannaCry “ransomware” cyber attack in May.
They included a large government-linked corporation, a government-linked investment firm and an insurance company.
