KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police have nabbed the head of the notorious Double Seven gang in a special operation Tuesday evening.

The man in his 40s, who is a Datuk and widely known as Pak Long in the underworld, was picked up at his house in Seremban by a team from Bukit Aman's special unit tasked with countering gang and secret society activities.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the suspect was detained to facilitate investigation under the Societies Act.

He said police were also investigating the man over another case in Chenderiang, Perak, but did not divulge further details.

Meanwhile, the New Straits Times was informed by sources that rumours had been circulating in the underworld that police had also detained more than 20 others in a crackdown against gang activities in the country.

A text message furnished by a source, claimed to be one of the messages that had gone viral among gang members, stated that a total of 29 people had been picked up by federal police's Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (Stagg) and state police D7 teams in Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

It said that those picked up were leaders of unregistered non-governmental organisations suspected to be linked to the underworld, and advised members to watch out for authorities raids.

However, Mohmad said that only the Double Seven leader has been picked up so far.
