PETALING JAYA: A general manager of a subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has been detained for alleged bribery involving RM500,000.
The suspect, aged 54, was arrested at 6.30pm yesterday at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya.
Also held to assist in the probe was his wife, aged 50.
The suspect was said to have accepted bribes to approve several projects involving the supply of buses, spare parts and maintenance work.
MACC director of investigations Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani confirmed the arrest of the couple, and added both suspects would be remanded today to assist in the probe.
Sources said the suspect was overseeing project technical support for the Rapid Bus Complex at Cheras Selatan, but had abused his position for personal gain.
“Investigations showed the suspect had pocketed the sum since 2013 while overseeing the company and projects under his charge.
“Checks also revealed the questionable sum was deposited into his wife’s account,” said the source.
Records also showed the suspect was a former chief operations officer of Rapid Penang, a Prasarana subsidiary.
The case will be investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
The offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of five times the amount of bribes involved, or RM10,000, whichever is higher
