Rapist thanks judge for jail and rotan sentence
GEORGE TOWN: A security guard facing charges of raping and killing a student thanked a Sessions Court judge for giving him 10 years in jail and two lashes of the rotan in another rape case.
Tarmizi Yaakob (pic), 22, from Permatang Damar Laut, smiled and said “terima kasih tuan” (thank you, sir) after Sessions judge Irwan Suainbon read out the sentence.
Ordering Tarmizi to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest in February last year, Irwan said rape was a serious offence.
“The victim has to live with the traumatic experience,” he said yesterday.
Tarmizi had earlier pleaded guilty to raping a 21-year-old clerk at a house in Teluk Kumbar between 4.30am and 5.30am on Oct 8, 2015.
The offence under Section 376 of the Penal Code, carries up to 20 years in jail and whipping.
In mitigation, defence counsel Sukhindarpal Singh said Tarmizi had shown remorse by pleading guilty, saving the court’s time and expenses.
Earlier, DPP Lim Saw Sim called for an appropriate sentence, adding that the crime was serious and of public interest.
Tarmizi was also charged with raping a 17-year-old schoolgirl on Oct 25, 2015, between 7.30am and 7.30pm at the Bandar Baru Perda flats in Teluk Kumbar.
Tarmizi, who was also charged with murdering the girl at the same place, time and day, now faces the death penalty upon conviction
