The suspect in a botched armed robbery at a petrol kiosk in Setapak, is believed to have acquired the pistol from a friend who was also arrested

Suspect in Setapak robbery had "borrowed" gun from a friend

KUALA LUMPUR: The suspect in a botched armed robbery at a petrol kiosk in Setapak yesterday, is believed to have acquired the pistol from a friend of his.

The suspect’s friend was arrested in front of a convenience store in Setapak at 11.30pm yesterday.

Wangsa Maju district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said that although the main suspect, 30, did not have a criminal record, his friend had a record for drugs and illegal weapon possession.

Checks suggest that the duo have no links to a recent shooting case, also in Setapak, where two gunmen had killed a businessman in broad daylight at a traffic light junction.

In the 5.30pm incident yesterday, the suspect had barged into the petrol kiosk, brandishing the gun at a Bangladeshi cashier and demanded cash from the register.

Another Bangladeshi staff had grabbed the gunman from behind. In the scuffle, the suspect fired off three shots and one of them hit the cashier.

Members of the public managed to apprehend the suspect. The injured worker is reportedly in stable condition.
