Sultan Nazrin: Musa Hitam a 'voice of reason' in modern-day politics
NST
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah today paid tribute to Tun Musa Hitam, describing him as a true product of the "Malaysian Dream".
He said Musa, 82, stands out as among a handful who have left “an ineradicable mark on the country".
Nazrin said Musa had contributed immensely to the country, and the latter stood out as a man of principle, “who had stood like a rock, and paid the price for it when he resigned as deputy prime minister for what he believed in”.
He said Musa was a hair’s breadth away from becoming the fifth prime minister of Malaysia when he resigned and walked away from the post in 1986.
Nazrin said Musa relinquished his position because he fundamentally disagreed with policy directions that his principles would not allow him to accept.
"Instead, he chose to stand by the sidelines, offering his views only when sought, or during times of crisis, and remaining a non-partisan voice of reason in the tumultuous world of modern-day Malaysian politics," the sultan said when launching Musa's book titled 'Frankly Speaking', here, today.
