KOTA KINABALU: Two children who were in a vehicle when it was carjacked were found safe hardly 500m metres away from where they were taken early Friday.
The boys were found inside the abandoned Proton Wira car in a parking area behind Gaya Street here by police, hardly 30 minutes after the mother raised the alert following the 6.10am Friday incident.
The vehicle was stolen as their mother was withdrawing money from an ATM in the town here.
It was learned that the two children, aged eight and five, were found as police mounted a hunt in the town centre for the suspect, who was believed to have fled on foot.
The mother had apparently left the two children inside the unlocked car with the engine running to withdraw cash from an ATM when the suspect jumped into the vehicle and drove off.
Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm M.Chandra confirmed the incident and said they were hunting for the suspect.
