IPOH: Four gold traders were robbed of RM1.4mil at the Tapah rest stop on the North-South Expressway, about 75km from here.
Tapah OCPD Supt Som Sak Din Keliaw said the incident occurred when five suspects in two cars surrounded the traders’ Mercedes Benz on Wednesday night.
“The traders, aged between 20 and 30, from Penang were driving to Kuala Lumpur to buy gold.
“They stopped at the R&R and two of the traders got out to buy food,” Supt Som Sak told reporters after the closing ceremony of a crime prevention seminar by Perak police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Osman Salleh yesterday.
“One of the suspects’ car swerved in and blocked the front of their car while another car blocked the back to prevent the traders from escaping,” he said.
Supt Som Sak said the suspects were armed with weapons, believed to be pistols and a hammer.
“After getting out from their vehicles, they smashed the side and front windows of the car. They also told the two traders in the car to remain silent while they searched the vehicle,” he said.
“They managed to find money that was kept in a Milo tin and cardboard box.”
Supt Som Sak said police believed the traders had been targeted.
“No shots were fired during the incident,” he said.
In an unrelated case, Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said police were looking for one G. Bharathy Vasu, 27, to assist in investigations into a car chase on Wednesday that left a policeman injured.
ACP Sum said the last known address of Bharathy Vasu, also known as “Don Tiger”, was RPT Batu 8, Tambahan Satu Kampung Lim Tan, here.
“He has three previous cases for gang robbery, possessing counterfeit notes and possession of dangerous weapons,” he said.
In the 3pm incident, a suspect rammed his car through two roadblocks that sparked off the car chase.
The suspect also knocked down one of four policemen on motorcycles who were chasing him.

Semasa buat hentian kereta mangsa telah dihimpit secara tiba-tiba dr arah tepi dan belakang oleh kereta suspek iaitu jenis vios hitam no pen wnl 7323 dan honda civic putih pgk 3836. Kesemua suspek 6 org disyaki india berdasarkan bahasa yg digunakan.2 pucuk pistol digunakan diacukan ke arah mangsa. Kereta mangsa dipecahkan menggunakan kapak oleh salah seorang suspek. Suspek telah mengambil 2 kotak mengandungi wang tunai rm 1.4 juta. Sebuah laptop dan sebuah ipad. Kejadian berlaku kurang 5 minit dan suspek kemudian terus melarikan diri. Kesemua mangsa tidak alami kecederaan.
Wang tunai rm 1.4 juta adalah kutipan drpd pelanggan yang memesan emas daripada p.pinang dan mangsa merupakan ejen untuk dapatkan emas di KL. Mangsa dlm perjalanan dr penang ke KL.
