Church group regrets no action against Taman Medan protesters

KUALA LUMPUR: The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) has voiced its disappointment that the authorities had decided not to take action against a group of residents over the Taman Medan church protest earlier this year.
The protesters had gathered outside the church located at a shoplot in Taman Medan on Apr 20 to demand that the cross affixed to the building be taken down.
"The CCM views the actions of the protestors as an interference with the freedom of worship of the church members,” said its secretary-general Rev Dr Hermen Shastri (pic)in a statement on Tuesday.
“It is important that the freedom of worship of persons of all faiths be protected by the authorities at all times, and any interference with this constitutional right be taken seriously,” he said.
Dr Hermen expressed the council’s regret that the Attorney-General’s Chambers had thought it fit to close the case.
In a written reply to Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad at the Dewan Rakyat last week, the Home Ministry said the AGC decided that no further action be taken in the case.
It said the police had opened investigation papers under Section 448/511 of the Penal Code for trespass of property involving a group of 40 residents from the Taman Medan community in Petaling Jaya.
The investigation papers were completed and handed over to the AGC.
