'Voice told me to be Imam'

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who slapped the imam of National Mosque told police a voice told him to take over as imam. Police have identified him as a foreigner, in his early 30s, from Kashmir.

The man had interrupted Friday prayers in the mosque at about 1.30pm when he walked up to imam Mohd Zuhairee Mohd Yatim and slapped him.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah said the man tried to grab the Imam’s microphone before slapping him on his right cheek. The man was heard shouting "you go back."
“The man even tried to lead the prayers. However, the mosque’s personnel managed to intervene and stop him.
“He was then handed over to the police,”  ACP Zainol said.
He said the man appeared to be mentally unstable and was talking to himself.
“He told us that he heard a voice telling him to be the Imam,” he said.
ACP Zainol said the man is being held at Tun H.S. Lee police station.
