SHAH ALAM: Shoppers busy doing their weekend shopping at a hypermarket in Section 13 here ran helter-skelter when a goldsmith outlet there was robbed in broad daylight.
During the incident at about 5.15pm, five men wearing reflective vests and full-face helmets entered the shop located on the ground floor of the hypermarket.
According to witness accounts, one of the robbers kept watch near the shop’s entrance while the others smashed the glass casing where jewellery was displayed.
Several workers were inside the shop at the time of the incident.
It was learned that the robbery lasted about 10 minutes. Two gunshots were also fired, but there was no report of injuries or death.
The value of jewellery robbed is not known.
Shoppers ran for their lives after hearing the gunshots, while workers on duty at shops and kiosks nearby ducked for cover.
“I ran behind the counter to hide with several other colleagues after hearing the shots,” said a foreign worker who wanted to be known only as Ajmal. “Many people were running in panic. It was scary.”
The robbers were seen fleeing the area in a car.
Police were alerted and a team of forensics officers were sent to the scene.
