Senior police officer in ‘Casanova’ case testifies about ‘being controlled’

GEORGE TOWN: A senior female police officer told the magistrate's court here on Monday that she did not intentionally release a detainee known as 'Casanova', two years ago.
ASP L. Chandkumary (pic), 56, said she did not remember anything during the incident and found herself alone in a parked car at the roadside, in full police uniform.
During examination in chief by her counsel Danny C. Navarednam, she told the court that the detainee had been staring intently at her before the incident.
"He kept staring at me and at the same time he was mumbling something.
“My body was going weak and my head was heavy. I could not say anything at that moment.
“I was just being controlled by something, I cannot explain.
"I can't remember what happened. What I remember is, I was inside the car alone.
“The car was parked by the roadside. I was confused. I believe at that time he escaped," she said.
Asked by counsel as to why she had given RM50 to the police escort to buy food prior to the alleged incident, Chandkumary said she did not have any ulterior motive.
She said it was just a gesture as a senior officer since it was lunch hour at the time.
Chandkumary who claimed the detainee had "manipulated" her mind, pleaded not  guilty to two charges on Oct 21, 2013.
On the first charge, she is accused of releasing K. Prabaharan, 47, who is facing a cheating charge, at 1.50 pm on Oct 9, 2013, at the George Town Court Complex.
She faces up to three years' jail, a fine, or both, if found guilty, under Section 225A(1)(a) of the Penal Code.
On the second charge, Chandkumary is accused of making a false report at the Northeast Police Station at 8.05pm.
The charge under Section 182 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum six months' jail or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
Magistrate Dianne Ningrad Nor Azhar adjourned the trial to April 27; the prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Talib. - Bernama
