PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained 15 enforcement officers suspected to be involved in the smuggling of petrol and diesel to neighbouring countries.
The officers, attached to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) inspection centres, were said to have received bribes of up to RM4,000 from unlicensed fuel operators in Durian Burung, Kedah.
An MACC source said those detained included high-ranking police officers and those from the anti-smuggling unit of the police.
The suspects were said to have demanded bribes on a monthly basis from the operators in return for protection against legal action.
They were detained in Bukit Kayu Hitam on Monday morning under Ops Licin 2, which was carried out in Perak and Kedah.
The investigations come under Section 16(a) (B) of the MACC Act 2009 involving the offense of soliciting bribes by a public servant.
