Hawaii transportation officials released video Tuesday of a teenage Somali-immigrant’s hopping from a jet’s wheel well April 20 after stowing away for a 5½-hour flight.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation has released footage showing a teenage boy emerging from the wheel well of a Boeing 767 on April 20. The boy stowed away in the plane, travelling from San Jose to Maui, in an attempt to find his birth mother. In this video, shot from surveillance cameras, the boy is seen jumping down from the plane then talking to an airport worker for several minutes.
This is the full statement from Hawaii Department of Transportation:
On Sunday, April 20, a juvenile male was found walking on the tarmac at Kahului Airport just prior to 11:30 a.m. The teen appeared disoriented and was questioned by a worker near the plane who alerted security. TSA and the FBI were also contacted. Surveillance video at Kahului Airport showed what appeared to be the boy exiting from the wheel well of a plane from San Jose, California, that had landed in Kahului, Maui, at about 10:30 a.m. The boy was treated by airport and county medics and then transported to a Maui hospital.
Statement regarding airport security released by Hawaii Department of Transportation on April 22.
Hawaii airport security includes multiple layers of security involving many agencies. While we cannot disclose details of our security operations we can say that perimeter security includes foot patrols, vehicle patrols, and video surveillance.
Hawaii DOT Airports Division is continually working with our security partners including the FAA to improve operations and security.
An incident such as this serves as a reminder for everyone to be aware of their surroundings and if they see something, say something and report it to authorities.

HONOLULU: The security footage looks unassuming at first: a Hawaiian Airlines jet parked at a gate at the Maui airport under overcast skies, and workers going through their regular routine.

Then, the 15-year-old’s legs dangle briefly from the plane’s belly and he drops to the concrete.
Hawaii transportation officials released video Tuesday of a teenage Somali-immigrant’s hopping from a jet’s wheel well April 20 after stowing away for a 5½-hour flight.
The video largely confirms previous accounts given by FBI and airport officials of Yahya Abdi’s seemingly unbelievable story: that he ran away from home, hopped a fence at Mineta San Jose International Airport and climbed into the wheel well of the closest plane.

Abdi survived the flight at 35,000 feet despite low oxygen and freezing temperatures.

15-year-old Somali boy Yahye Abdi, who survived a nearly six-hour flight stowed in the wheel well of a Hawaii-bound jet, has been returned to California and placed in the custody of social services
The six minutes of security footage that the Hawaii Department of Transportation released show Abdi lowering himself from the Boeing 767 and jumping to the ground.
He sits on the concrete for 13 seconds, then gets up and slowly walks toward the front of the plane. He wobbles slightly as he walks, pausing briefly a few times in the roughly 40 seconds it takes him to get under the passageway connecting the front of the airplane with the terminal.
Abdi walks up to an airport worker driving a cart, and the two chat for about three minutes before walking away together. The boy stays standing the whole time.
Hawaii Department of Transportation spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter said the footage was released after the state attorney general’s office reviewed media requests.
San Jose, California, police spokesman Albert Morales said the Somali immigrant flew back to California over the weekend and was being cared for by Santa Clara County Child Protective Services. --AP
