Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) said BN will not field a candidate in the May 25 Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election, following MCA's decision not to contest the seat.
Najib, who is in Myanmar attending the 24th Asean Summit, however, said another candidate would likely join the fray and the decision would be made in due course, according to a Bernama report today.
Asked whether the candidate would be from another Barisan Nasional (BN) component party, Najib reportedly told the media: "Not from the components, but other parties, maybe, will contest as independents. We will decide later.
He also said he accepted the MCA's decision not to contest the seat, but added that it did not mean that the DAP would have an easy passage.
Yesterday, MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan announced that the MCA would not be fielding a candidate in the by-election as it wanted to focus on thwarting PAS' plan to table a private member’s bill on hudud in the Dewan Rakyat.
Najib said the MCA was undergoing a consolidation process to enable it to be stronger and more respected.
"I hope MCA will continue to focus on strengthening itself as a political party and BN component," he said, according to Bernama. – May 11, 2014.
