MUAR: A couple has been charged with the murder of a 14-month-old toddler they were babysitting.
Tan Yean Seang, 35, and his wife Tan Kok Shoo, 39, allegedly committed the offence between 6.30pm on April 16 and 9.30am on April 17 at17 Jalan Omri here.
They were charged in the magistrate’s court here yesterday under Section 302 of the Penal Code with intentionally causing the death of Lim Yunn Jia.
Both the volunteer teachers said they understood the charge when it was read out to them in Mandarin by an interpreter.
The couple are facing the mandatory death sentence.
No plea was recorded and magistrate Fridaus Md Isa fixed May 27 for mention of the case.
DPP A. Shaarmini represented the prosecution while the accused were unrepresented.
The toddler’s mother Kuek Hwet Nak, 30, who was present in court with her husband and relatives, was on the verge of tears during the proceedings.
“I cannot understand how the babysitters could have been so careless with my baby girl. I never had any problems with them as they have also been taking care of my four-year-old son since he was a baby,” she told reporters.
The seven-month pregnant businesswoman said she was in Taiwan with her husband when their baby daughter died.
