GEORGE TOWN: A man believed to be a deputy minister’s nephew was rescued after he fell into the sea at the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge here today.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Lai Fah Hin said a group of fishermen travelling in a boat saw the man, a student at a private college here, struggling in the water and rushed to his aid.

In the 2.40pm incident, the man, 26, was said to be driving towards Batu Kawan on the mainland before stopping his car at KM13.9.

The fishermen dragged him onto their boat before sending him to the Penang Hospital.

He has been placed at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

His condition is said to be stable.

“The fishermen found him about 500m away from the island and brought him to the Batu Uban marine base before rushing him to the hospital,” Lai said in a statement.

Checks with Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd, the concessionaire of the RM4.5 billion long bridge, showed that no vehicles were allowed to stop at any point along the 24km structure, the longest in Southeast Asia.

Police are investigating the incident by viewing the recordings on the incident via the closed-circuit television cameras installed along the bridge.
