A picture of it was uploaded to social media on Thursday morning, and has now been viewed more than a million times.
Deemed insensitive given the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 is said to have crashed into the Indian Ocean killing all 239 people on board, BA said it was sorry for any offence caused.
The advert was spotted by Twitter user Alan Milford (@alz) at the London station, and says ‘Escape the commute and discover the Indian Ocean’.
It quickly went viral and sparked an apology by the airline.
British Airways posted on Twitter: “Our Indian Ocean advert contained pre-scheduled content that we recognise is inappropriate at this time.
“We’re sorry for any offence caused.”
The Beijing-bound airliner disappeared on March 8 hours after setting off from Kuala Lumpur, and despite continued search efforts by a number of countries has not been found.
