SINGAPORE: A local man was arrested on suspicion of attacking a priest at the Holy Spirit Church, Upper Thomson Road on Sunday morning.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 22-year-old suspect was a regular congregant of the church and allegedly attacked the priest after a church service.
Police received an emergency call at 10.35am. "The man was immediately detained by church security officers. No weapons were found on him, and he was then handed over to police officers who responded at the scene," the statement said.
The suspect is currently being investigated for disturbing public order.
The police will also refer him to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for further examination.
"We would like to remind the public not to speculate as the investigation is still ongoing," the police said.
Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore informed that the priest had received treatment and had only slightly swelling on his face.
"We ask all parties to remain calm, avoid speculation and pray for the well-being of the priests and individuals involved in this incident," the Archbishop's Communications Office said in a statement.
