SAN FRANCISCO: A plane carrying 10 people was reported missing late Thursday evening near Nome, Alaska's westernmost major city, Xinhua reported, citing official statements.
The Alaska State Police reported that the flight was carrying nine passengers and a pilot on board, and they were contacted by the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at 4 p.m. (0100 GMT Friday) about the missing plane.
The Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft owned by Bering Air reportedly flew from Unalakleet to Nome, according to the Nome Volunteer Fire Department.
Data from FlightRadar showed the flight reported the last information at 3.16 p.m. in Norton Sound airspace.
White Mountain fire marshal Jack Adams said the plane disappeared from radar along the coast from Nome to Topkok.
Rescuers are currently searching an area of about 50 kilometers in the area, according to Adams.
"If they don't find anything, we will probably gather another crew to help," he said.
The Nome Volunteer Fire Department asked the public not to form individual search groups due to weather and safety reasons.
The Coast Guard is inspecting the affected area and the C-130 aircraft will fly in a grid pattern to search for the missing aircraft, according to the department's post on its social media page.
