Presiden Kuil Sri Bala Thandayuthapani Kapt (B) VR.

A judge ordered all parties, including Elon Musk, to attend a court hearing in Philadelphia on Thursday in a lawsuit seeking to stop a political action committee controlled by the billionaire from awarding $1 million to registered U.S. voters in battleground states ahead of the Nov. 5 U.S. election.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office filed the lawsuit on Monday. It called the giveaway by Musk's America PAC, which backs Republican former President Donald Trump, an "illegal lottery" that enticed Pennsylvania residents to share personal data.

"It is further ordered that all parties must be present at the time of the hearing," a judge wrote on Wednesday in an order with the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. The hearing in the case was moved up to Thursday morning from Friday.

Trump faces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in what polls show to be a tight race for the White House.

A representative for America PAC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Musk's representatives have not responded to requests for comment.

Musk promised to give $1 million each day to someone who signed his online free-speech and gun-rights petition. Legal experts consulted by Reuters last week were divided on whether the giveaway violates federal laws that make it a crime to pay or offer to pay a person to register to vote.

The Justice Department sent a letter to America PAC warning that the billionaire's giveaways for registered voters who sign his petition may violate federal law, CNN reported last week.

The Trump campaign is broadly reliant on outside groups for canvassing voters, meaning the super PAC founded by Musk - the world's richest man - plays an outsized role in what is expected to be a razor-thin election.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has never discussed any proposals to introduce a subscription tax on ChatGPT as mentioned on social media, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said it is common knowledge that any proposal for a new tax must be brought to Parliament and not just discussed at the Cabinet level.

"To date, we have not discussed this matter, whether in the Cabinet or among ministers, regarding the proposal to impose a tax (on ChatGPT).

"We also did not hear about this in Budget 2025 presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, so in my opinion, this matter should not be entertained," he told reporters after attending the 2024 MADANI Deepavali Open House here today.

The celebration, organised by the Digital Ministry, was attended by Anwar, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, other Cabinet members and deputy ministers.

On another matter, Fahmi said Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) and Khazanah Nasional should be given time to explain their RM43.9 million losses after selling their stakes in the e-commerce platform FashionValet Sdn Bhd for RM3.1 million.

"We're monitoring the issue. I have not yet gotten the full report about what exactly happened.

"This came up from a parliamentary response. So I think we have to give them a little bit of time to explain themselves. It was public money, and of course, a lot of people are asking," he said.

On Oct 29, the Finance Ministry revealed in a written parliamentary reply that Khazanah and PNB lost RM43.9 million from the sale of their minority investments in FashionValet.

In 2018, Khazanah invested RM27 million and PNB RM20 million for minority stakes in FashionValet.

JOHOR BAHRU: The police have recovered RM7.2 million from the estimated RM20 million ransom money paid by the family of a businessman who was kidnapped on Oct 13.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the recovered ransom included RM1.95 million in cash, one million Singapore dollars (RM3.3 million) and 400,000 in cryptocurrency (RM1.75 million).

"Besides this sum, we also found case items including a Pietro Beretta pistol, 250 live rounds of ammunition and a pair of handcuffs," he told a press conference, which was also attended by Johor Police chief Datuk CP M. Kumar, at the Johor Police Contingent headquarters, here today.

Elaborating, Mohd Shuhaily said so far, 14 individuals have been detained in connection with the case, and their roles in the kidnapping have been identified, including in the planning and execution of the abduction, disposal of evidence and management of the ransom funds.

However, he said the police are still investigating the motive and mastermind of the kidnapping of the businessman, who is a real estate developer.

"Regarding the victim's family member who has also been detained, it is still under investigation. Revealing the identity might interfere with the investigation. For now, it is too early to share this information, but I can confirm that it is a woman," he said.

Mohd Shuhaily said the case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, and the public is advised not to speculate or make any comments that could disrupt investigation or manipulate facts to create public unrest.

Earlier, Johor Bahru High Court senior assistant registrar Chai Ing Hien issued a seven-day remand extension from tomorrow until Nov 6 for three Vietnamese suspects to facilitate further investigation under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961.

The three suspects, including a woman in her 30s, had previously been remanded for a week to assist investigation.

Also remanded was another local male suspect detained on Monday.

The 59-year-old businessman is believed to have been abducted around 5 am while waiting for an e-hailing service to take him to the airport for a business trip abroad. He was safely released on the same day of the incident.

US$3 billion development for TRX diverted into Najib's account, says judge

US$3 billion development for TRX diverted into Najib's account, says judge

The High Court today ordered imprisoned ex-PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to enter a defense in his corruption trial over the multibillion-dollar looting of the 1MDB state investment fund. - Astro AWANI/SHAHIR OMAR

KUALA LUMPUR: The flow of money from the US$3 billion bond issuance purportedly for the development of Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). had ultimately been diverted into the former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's bank account.

Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah (now Court of Appeal judge) who heard Najib's 1MDB case said that the matter was stated in the testimony by 47th prosecution witness (PW47), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Analyst Adam Ariff Mohd Roslan.

The judge said on March 12, 2013, the accused attended the signing ceremony of the joint venture between 1MDB and Aabar Investment PJS amounting to US$6 billion that was held at the Prime Minister's Office.

"The prosecution evidence shows that on March 14, 2013, the accused signed a letter of support (LOS) to raise a loan through the issuance of bonds by 1MDB in the sum of US$3 billion. On March 19, the disbursement was made immediately by Bank of New York Mellon Group to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad Global Investment Limited's (1MDBGIL) account.

"The evidence on the speed of the fundraising transaction was given by PW26 (former Finance Ministry deputy secretary-general, Datuk Siti Zauyah Mohd Desa), PW42 (former non-executive director of SRC Datuk Suboh Md Yassin), PW9 (former 1MDB chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi) and PW10 (former 1MDB chief executive officer Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman)," he said in his 41-page summary judgment.

Justice Sequerah further said that despite the defence allegations of the involvement of others with regard to the decision-making process, it was the accused who had taken action in various capacities, namely at the 1MDB stage as sole shareholder, the Minister of Finance (MOF) stage and at the Cabinet stage.

"The accused was therefore the ultimate decision maker. He had also not seen fit to lodge any police reports in respect of the alleged involvement of others.

"A consideration of all the evidence above showed that the accused had taken such actions in matters in which he had an interest, which were the basic facts necessary to raise the presumption under section 23(2) Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission Act in respect of the third charge," he said.

The judge also held that upon a perusal and analysis of the evidence and based upon the demeanour of several witnesses, the court found that despite the accusations levelled, the credibility of these witnesses remains intact with regard to the main facts in issue in this case.

Among the witnesses are former 1MDB counsel Jasmine Loo Ai Swan, Najib's special officer Datuk Amhari Effendi Nazarudin and former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

"This court also finds that there ultimately would be no motive for these witnesses to testify and to frame up the accused who was at the time wielding enormous powers as Prime Minister and Finance Minister.

"It is important to bear in mind that at the end of the day, these witnesses were not the ones on trial and notwithstanding the allegations against them, I find that their evidence in respect of the main facts in issue in the trial, are capable of belief," he said.

Meanwhile, Justice Sequerah pointed out that Najib approved the two loans to buy back the shares from Aabar.

"1MDB Energy (Langat) Limited (1MELL) entered into two term loan agreements with Deutsche Bank Hong Kong, the first of which was a US$250 million first loan which constituted the first action in this charge (fourth charge)," he said.

The judge said that according to PW9, the directors' circular resolution (DCR) was received together with the Special Rights Redeemable Preference Shareholder in Writing (SRRP) and Minutes of Representative attached which had been approved by the accused.

"PW10 also testified that it was the practice in 1MDB that when the Board of Directors (BOD) receives the DCR, the Shareholder's Resolution and Minutes By Representative signed by the accused were attached together and originally, undated.

"Although there was no SRPP and MR tendered by the prosecution in respect of this transaction, the evidence of the prosecution witnesses was sufficient to establish that the DCR for the US$250 million was accompanied by the SRPP and the MR duly approved by the accused," he said.

Justice Sequerah said evidence was led to show that the first loan taken by 1MDB amounting to US$250 million would not have materialized without the approval of the accused.

He said the purpose of the second loan of US$975 million was to refinance the US$250 million and also to pay the remaining outstanding payment to Aabar.

"PW10 confirmed that the BOD signed the DCR for the US$ 975 million loan. When this DCR was received by the directors, the Shareholders Resolution and Minutes by Representative were already signed by that accused," he said.

Earlier, Justice Sequerah ordered Najib, 71, to enter his defence on four charges of using his position to obtain gratification totalling RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds and 21 money laundering charges involving the same money after finding that the prosecution had established a prima facie case on all 25 charges at the end of the prosecution's case.

EFL CUP HIGHLIGHTS : Spurs sink Man City 2-1, Man United thump Leicester 5-2, as Liverpool in 5 goal thriller to make League Cup quarters

Reuters

31-10- 2024 08:11 AM

TOTTENHAM Hotspur beat Manchester City 2-1 with goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr as interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistlerooy led his side to a thumping 5-2 win over Leicester City in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday.

Former United striker Van Nistelrooy’s victory in his first game in charge brought much-needed cheer to Old Trafford after the sacking of Erik ten Hag and a miserable run in the Premier League.

“I am here to help, to serve and give my everything for the club, that will never change,“ Van Nistelrooy said after his interim stint got off to an electrifying start with midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scoring twice each.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou remains in with a chance of fulfilling his promise to win a trophy in his second season as coach of the North London club after a superb attacking display.

City made seven changes form the side that beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend and they were opened up early as Spurs quickly played through their press. Dejan Kulusevski picked out Werner in the box, and the German striker lashed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.

Sarr got the second in the 25th minute after the ball found its way to him outside the penalty area following a well-worked corner, and the Senegalese midfielder curled it brilliantly inside the right-hand post.

City pulled one back in first-half stoppage time as Matheus Nunes connected with a cross from Savinho to score with their first effort on target.

Having already lost key players this season, City coach Pep Guardiola said he wanted his side to perform well with no injuries, but Savinho picked up a knock that saw him carried off in the 62nd minute.

That robbed City of momentum, but Nico O’Reilly still almost grabbed a late equaliser, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line as Spurs hung on for victory.

“It’s a cup tie played against a formidable opponent, I thought we did well for the most part,“ Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

“We didn’t allow too many clearcut chances, we could have put the game away but City are always going to push you,“ he added.

Cody Gakpo struck twice for Liverpool as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2 and Arsenal enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win at Preston North End to book their spot in the last eight by knocking out the last non-Premier League club left in the competition.

Crystal Palace grabbed a 2-1 win at Aston Villa, while an Alexander Isak strike and an own goal from Axel Disasi helped Newcastle United ease to a 2-0 home win over Chelsea to make it through to the last eight.

Tottenham will host Manchester United in the quarter-finals, Arsenal face Crystal Palace, Newcastle play Brentford and Liverpool travel to Southampton.

JUDGE: US$3 billion development for TRX diverted into Najib's account

US$3 billion development for TRX diverted into Najib's account, says judge

The High Court today ordered imprisoned ex-PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to enter a defense in his corruption trial over the multibillion-dollar looting of the 1MDB state investment fund. -

KUALA LUMPUR: The flow of money from the US$3 billion bond issuance purportedly for the development of Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) had ultimately been diverted into the former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's bank account.

ANKARA: The Spanish football leagues - La Liga EA SPORTS and La Liga HYPERMOTION, will observe a minute's silence for this weekend to commemorate the victims of the floods in Valencia, Anadolu Agency reported citing the organizers on Wednesday.

In a statement, La Liga expressed its condolences and solidarity to the families of the flood victims and individuals still missing in the disaster.

Devastating floods in the eastern province of Valencia claimed 95 lives, according to preliminary data from Spain's Interior Ministry.

The latest death toll comes after devastating overnight flooding, caused by the worst storm of the century.

The storm was comparable to two other storms in the 1980s, according to Spain's meteorological agency.

Meanwhile, Valencia football club, one of the top teams in the La Liga division, said it had turned its home stadium, the Mestalla, into a "food and basic needs storage center" to help those affected by the disaster.

On Saturday, Valencia will play a league match against defending Spanish champions Real Madrid at Mestalla. - BERNAMA

The floods that hit Valencia, Spain reportedly continued to worsen as many people died and were reported missing after heavy rain hit the region since Tuesday.

The situation showed a woman in a video recording, walking along a muddy road while calling out the names of her loved ones.

In addition to the woman, the footage also shows a number of cars being washed away along with piles of debris due to the flood.

As of Wednesday local time, the death toll from flooding in Valencia rose to 95 after heavy rains hit the eastern part of the region.

According to local authorities, bridges and buildings were swept away while a number of homes and cars were flooded.

International reports reported that it was the worst flood in the country in three decades.

The conditions caused accidents on highways and submerged agricultural areas in the region that produces two-thirds of citrus fruits.

For the record, Spain is one of the main global exporters of the fruit.

The storm that started on Tuesday brought heavy rain that equaled a year's rainfall in a few hours, causing rivers to overflow quickly and even tornadoes.

Desperate residents took to social media to call for help after local emergency lines were down due to flooded buildings and a high volume of calls.

The Valencian government also opened a dedicated phone line to report missing persons.

Residents are still being urged to avoid any highway travel, and most schools in the autonomous region remain closed.

Meanwhile, the storm system continues to move across the Iberian peninsula, with much of north-east and south-west Spain placed under heavy rain weather warnings.

KUALA LUMPUR: When faced with the prosecution in court, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak admitted how difficult it was for him to find a true friend who was willing to accompany him.

In fact, what the former Prime Minister found very disappointing is that many people only show their faces when looking for pleasure and some also make faces.

"But this life is full of lessons. In today's bitter times, there is a drop of sweetness and appreciation," said the former UMNO President in a post on his Facebook account on Wednesday.

.

Yesterday, he was ordered to defend himself by the High Court on the prosecution of four cases of using his position to bribe almost RM2.3 billion of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds and 21 charges of money laundering related to the same money.

Judge, Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled this after finding that the prosecution had successfully proved a prima facie case at the end of the prosecution.

In the same message, the former Pekan Member of Parliament thanked all parties who were willing to attend to wait for the outcome of the case.

"There are so many supporters and ordinary people who remember the services and miss the policies of the previous administration.

"Sincerely. This is what true friends really are. May friendship in this world last, be carried and become capital in the afterlife," said Najib, who is now 71 years old.

Korean students running scared of 'APT.' as Rosé's catchy earworm derails exam prep

Students preparing for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), known as suneung, are steering clear of "APT.," the recent collaboration between Blackpink's Rosé and Bruno Mars.

The song's catchy lyrics — repeating "apateu," the Korean word for apartment — in an addictive melody have made it a global sensation. The track has topped Spotify's Global Top 50 chart and is seeing a vast amount of content using the music on short-form video platforms.

The song is becoming a taboo as students fear it might linger in their minds and disrupt their concentration, especially with the suneung approaching on Nov. 14.

Previously, SS501’s "U R Man" (2008), SHINee's "Ring Ding Dong" (2009) and Red Velvet’s "Dumb Dumb" (2016) were infamous among students preparing for big tests. While most of these catchy songs are popular idol group hits favored by teenagers, even children’s songs like "Baby Shark" (2015) and some catchy ad jingles can cause distractions to students trying to concentrate on exam preparation.

“I’m worried that the song will play in my head even during the exam,” one student told Yonhap News on Sunday. “Adults might laugh and say, ‘Why stress over something like that?’ but for us, with such an important test ahead, it can feel unsettling.”

In online communities used by exam-preparing students, posting "bait" links that play these banned songs has become a long-running prank, even leading to account suspensions for some who go too far.

One user commented, “I saw one of these banned songs on the internet by accident, and now I can’t get it out of my head — it’s driving me crazy. How do I make it stop?”

This phenomenon, where a song’s melody keeps replaying in one’s mind, is known as an earworm.

For the general public, earworms can help relax a tense mind, but for students, they are often disruptive.

“Our psychology is more fragile than we realize, and simple, repetitive sounds can easily trigger emotional bias. Youths, especially those with less experience, are more prone to experiencing earworms,” said Dankook University psychology professor Lim Myung-ho in an interview with Yonhap News.

“Listening to soothing classical music, practicing light meditation, breathing exercises or stretching can help calm anxious minds. Developing a personalized routine before mock exams can also be an effective way to manage stress.”
