The latest Nikkei COVID-19 Recovery Index highlights a divide between Asia and the West, with the U.S. having a particularly rough time as the omicron variant drives an explosion in cases.
The index assesses countries and regions on infection management, vaccine rollouts and social mobility. The higher the ranking, the closer a place is to recovery, characterized by fewer infections, bigger inoculation rates and less-strict social distancing measures.
The methodology for the latest ranking was adjusted to keep the index up to date. Booster shot coverage has replaced the number of new vaccine doses as one of the subcategories for vaccinations. Short-term case fatality data was included as an additional subcategory for infection management.
