PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil says Zakaria Abdul Hamid can file an appeal against his sacking.

PETALING JAYA: PKR said it stands by its decision to sack central committee member Zakaria Abdul Hamid in the wake of a protest by party deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and 19 other top leaders.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the decision to sack Zakaria, the Bera division chief, was made by the central committee on the recommendation of the disciplinary board.

“It was not a decision by the party president (Anwar Ibrahim). As such, the matter of an apology by the president does not arise,” he said when asked if PKR would reverse its decision to sack Zakaria and if Anwar would apologise over the issue.

This morning, Azmin and 19 other central committee members, including MPs and assemblymen, rejected Zakaria’s sacking, saying it was illegal and did not go through the due process.

In a memorandum to the disciplinary board, they also urged Anwar to apologise for the “hasty decision” which they said did not get the support of two-thirds of the central committee members.

PKR had said it sacked Zakaria and Pahang ordinary member Ismail Duhladi based on advice given by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission after it had investigated allegations of corruption against them.

Zakaria said he had not been informed about any report lodged against him with the disciplinary board, and accused the party of having taken action without hearing his defence.

The sacking has led to a war of words between party leaders seen aligned to Azmin and Anwar.

Fahmi said the best forum for Zakaria in line with the party constitution was to file an appeal.

PETALING JAYA: The cold war in PKR deepens when pro-Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (pic) group, led by the deputy himself, attacks the party top leadership over the sacking of Bera PKR division chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid.

PKR central committee members including Azmin, vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, Tian Chua and 17 others, have rejected the sacking of Zakaria.

The memorandum was signed by other central committee members such as Haniza Mohamed Talha, Hilman Idham, Dr Daroyah Alwi, Amiruddin Shaari, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Sivarasa Rasiah, Rahimah Majid, Elizabeth Wong, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Zakaria Abdul Hamid, Radzlan Jalaluddin, Datuk Dr Mansor Othman, Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, Azmizam Zaman Huri, Gan Pei Nei, Hee Loy Sian and Datuk Seri R Santhara Kumar.

The central committee members, in a memorandum dated Nov 30 to the PKR disciplinary board, labelled the sacking of Zakaria as invalid.

In the memorandum, the central committee members also said the decision to sack Zakaria does not fulfil the principles of justice as it did not go through due process.

"This is strengthened by an open statement by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which explained a misunderstanding on their part to the Disciplinary Board.

"It is also stated that after investigations, there is no such case as alleged," it said.

The central committee members is also urging PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to apologise over the matter.

"We represent a majority of central committee members who were chosen by party members and we want to state our rejection towards the decision.

"We are urging for the party president to apologise over the hasty decision which clearly did not get the support of two-thirds of the central committee members," it said.

Last Sunday, PKR announced that Zakaria and Ismail Duhladi, an ordinary member from Pahang, were stripped of their party membership following corruption allegations brought against them by the MACC.

PKR disciplinary board chairman Datuk Ahmad Kassim said the party received a letter from MACC dated Oct 23 on the allegations, which allegedly happened during last year's party elections.

Zakaria was the former political secretary to Works Minister Baru Bian but resigned from the post voluntarily in February this year.

US companies such as chipmaker Micron Technology and iPhone supplier Jabil Inc are already building new factories in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese investments into Malaysia halved to US$1.7bil in the first nine months of the year from a year ago, though US investments soared seven times to US$5.9bil - reflecting a diversion of funds due to the Beijing-Washington trade clashes.

Data provided by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to Reuters on Friday showed that China, traditionally the Southeast Asian country's biggest investor, has now slipped to third position behind the United States and Japan.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) from Japan, with whom Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is trying to strengthen ties, jumped more than four times to RM11.81bil (US$2.83bil) in the January-September period.

Total approved FDI into Malaysia rose 6.5% to US$66.3bil, MIDA said, adding it was "actively negotiating" on 682 other projects with proposed investments of RM37.6bil.

Trade hostilities between the world's biggest two economies have pushed mostly U.S. companies to look for factories outside China to escape tit-for-tat tariffs.

For Malaysia, the biggest investments have come in the electrical and electronics industry, with one of the driving factors being that many semiconductor and other electronics products from the country do not attract U.S. tariffs, unlikethe 25% rate for China.

Flying Car Firm says Project Privately Funded, RM20million by MIGHT used for it's drone business expansion

Super drone project is privately funded, says Aerodyne CEO

Aerodyne CEO Kamarul Muhamed.

PETALING JAYA: The CEO of the company developing Malaysia’s first air mobility vehicle or “flying car” has welcomed an audit of his firm, saying not a single sen of public money was or will be used for the purpose.

Aerodyne CEO Kamarul Muhamed said the company did receive RM20mil from Malaysian VentureTech but said the investment was fully utilised for its drone business expansion.

“We have never approached the Entrepreneurial Development Ministry for any assistance other than for the purpose of working on the framework and regulations on drones in Malaysia, ” he said in a post on his Facebook page yesterday.

The posting followed a statement issued by the Entrepreneur Development Ministry on Thursday night to explain that the RM20mil allocated by Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) was not for the “flying car” (super drone) project developed by Aerodyne Group.

The ministry said the funding was to develop innovation and R&D for the new national car project, with DreamEDGE Sdn Bhd chosen as its anchor company and MIGHT leading it.

The ministry also explained that it had no allocation nor the authority to approve funding for investment in any drone project.

“This project is a private initiative and fully funded by local companies.

“The project does not involve any allocation from the government and as such, was not brought to the National Development Council or the Cabinet as it does require government approval, ” the ministry said.

The statement said that there was no need to conduct a financial and intellectual property audit on Aerodyne as it was not a government venture.

“The project does not involve any allocation from the ministry and the ministry will not suffer any losses if the project fails to take off.

“The ministry has been aware of the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) findings and suggestions with regard to air mobility.

“The ministry is in the midst of preparing comprehensive feedback on the matter.

“The information provided by the ministry is based on what (information) the ministry has.

“Information on action by the other agencies will be reviewed by the ministry, ” the statement read.

In his post, Kamarul said Aerodyne closed US$30mil (RM125mil) worth of Series B funding, which included the RM20mil from Malaysian VentureTech.

He said the other investors were from Indonesia, South Korea, China and Japan.

A check on business information platform Crunchbase showed that renowned international venture capital firms 500 Startups and Gobi were among Aerodyne’s investors.

Kamarul said the development of the air mobility vehicle was put on hold since August as Aerodyne was growing rapidly around the world in its core drone-based business and 100% focus was put on this expansion.

“Urban air mobility is a long-term journey and will not be mainstream until at least 2025.

“No reason for Aerodyne to focus on this now, ” he said, adding that the company had over 330 people in 25 countries with very little help from the government.

He said Aerodyne had turned down an independently evaluated and approved RM2mil grant from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) previously because it wanted the funds to be used by other entrepreneurs needing it.

Kamarul said MDEC, through the Gain programme, did play a big role in connecting the dots for the company’s global expansion.

He said that when the firm first connected with the ministry and other agencies earlier this year, it was about “giving back to the nation and helping to shape the future”.

“PAC never invited me for a talk. Never asked a single question of me. I have no interest in politics.

“The truth that many already know anyway will come out for others to see, ” he said.

Kamarul did not respond to The Star’s request for additional comment on the issue.

The PAC, in its report on the super drone project tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, said Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof had made a premature announcement on the project.

The High Court has allowed Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan to apply for bail.

Saminathan allowed to apply for bail

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has allowed Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan (pic), who is currently under detention for his alleged involvement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), to apply for bail.

The 34-year-old could not contain his tears when he heard the ruling and hugged his wife after the proceedings ended.

In his decision, Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ruled that Section 13 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) was ultra vires to Articles 8 and 121 of the Federal Constitution.

He said the judicial powers, or the power to adjudicate in civil or criminal matters, brought before the courts were exclusive to the courts.

“Judicial power is central to the doctrine of the separation of powers between the executive, the legislature and the judiciary which is a fundamental feature in the basic structure of the Constitution.

“Any usurpation of the judicial power by any other arm of the government infringes the sanctity of the doctrine of the separation of powers, violates the basic structure of the Constitution, and is therefore unconstitutional.

“Thus, Section 13 of Sosma is unconstitutional because it divests from the courts the judicial discretionary power to evaluate whether or not to grant or refuse bail applications, ” he said yesterday.

Nazlan, however, said the division did not mean that the applicant must or should be granted bail.

“In assessing whether to grant bail, the court will exercise its discretion judiciously, having regard to relevant considerations such as the nature and gravity of the offence, the severity of the punishment, the risk of the accused absconding, the danger of the offence being continued or repeated and the danger of the witnesses being tampered with, as well as the character, means and standing of the accused, ” he added.

Under Section 13 of Sosma, it was stated that the court was prohibited from considering the granting of bail to a person charged for an offence under Chapter 6A of the Penal Code.

When met by reporters, Saminathan’s lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said they would apply for bail at the Sessions Court next week.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Klang MP Charles Santiago were present at the court to show support to the applicant.

On Nov 1, Sessions Court Judge Rozina Ayob ruled that there was merit in the application made by the defence under Section 13(2) of Sosma to refer constitutional matters concerning bail to the High Court.

The court allowed the applications of Saminathan and 11 other men to refer constitutional issues on bail to the High Court.

The 11 are Seremban Jaya assemblyman P. Gunasekaran, 60; taxi driver V. Balamurugan, 37; postman S. Teeran, 38; scrap metal trader A. Kalaimughilan, 28; a chief executive officer of a corporation, S. Chandru, 38; technician S. Arivainthan, 27; storekeeper S. Thanagaraj, 26; security guard M. Pumugan, 29; school teacher Sundram Renggan @ Rengasamy, 52; DAP member V. Suresh Kumar, 43, and businessman B. Subramaniam, 57.

They were charged at separate Sessions Courts here and several states on Oct 29 and 31 with allegedly having links with LTTE.

  • Frightened bystanders look on and begin screaming and running for their lives as shots are fired
  • It comes two and a half years after 2017 terrorist attack on London Bridge which saw eight killed
Armed police shot a man on London Bridge today in an incident that has left one person dead and up to five people injured as Scotland Yard said they are treating it as 'terror-related'.
Dramatic video filmed at the scene around 2pm this afternoon shows at least four people struggling with a man on the ground before armed police officers step in.
The officers tell the people on top of the suspect to move away, before dragging the last bystander to safety and opening fire. One of the bystanders is holding a knife which seems to have been taken from the suspect.
The suspect lies wounded on the ground, but still moving as officers back away - clearly fearing that they are still in danger, potentially from explosives.
The incident comes two and a half years after the horrifying terrorist attack on London Bridge in June 2017 which saw three men kill eight people and injure 48 others.
While the episode unfolds this afternoon, hundreds of frightened bystanders look on and begin screaming and running for their lives as shots are fired.

Another video filmed from a nearby bus showed the apparent suspect being shot as he lay on the ground. Another man in a suit and jacket could be seen running from him, having retrieved a large knife.
After at least two shots were heard, passengers could be heard screaming, with one shouting: 'What the f***, they've killed him.'
BBC correspondent John McManus told BBC News that he had heard several gun shots on London Bridge.
'Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge,' he said.
'There appeared to be a fight going on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man.'
'Police then quickly arrived, including armed police, and then a number of shots were fired at this man.
'Police have now cleared the bridge, everybody has been told to move back and now on the northern side of the bridge, but there are more shots going on.
'I can't see what's happening now because we've been moved out of the way but there are shots going on, and you probably hear the police sounds as well.
'Everybody has cleared the area, the entire bridge has been moved, and right on the northern part of the bridge, right up until quite near the Bank of England, is being cleared.'
'There are more police coming into the area as I'm speaking, they're telling people to clear, to move back,' Mr McManus continued.
'We've been moved back hundreds of metres back from the northern side of the bridge, and I can only assume the same has happened on the southern side of the bridge as well.'
The BBC correspondent said he could see a man lying on the ground but the situation was 'ongoing'.
'There appeared to be a fight going on on the bridge, from what I could see, several people tried to restrain a man and it was then that armed police arrived and they fired shots at this person,' he said.
'The last I could see before we were moving from the bridge was lying on the ground.
'Since then, since we've been moved back, I've heard several more shots fired as well. So at this moment it seems to be a developing situation.'
On the picture on London Bridge, Mr McManus said: 'It's a busy, sunny Friday afternoon, with lots and lots of people out on the streets.
'Many people going into London Bridge, which is a major train station for people travelling out to the south of London and to the south coast.
'Of course, this is the business district, the City of London, so it's incredibly busy here but right now all the traffic has come to a complete halt, the police ticker tape has gone up, there's police cars everywhere.
'I can see traffic being turned around to go back where it came from, because the whole of London Bridge, has now been sealed off and those armed police are on the bridge right now.'
Kelby McNally, OK! Online's editor, works in the Northern and Shell Building on Lower Thames Street near to London Bridge.
She said: 'I was coming out of Pret on Eastcheap and there were loads of people just running, I thought it was a fire alarm or something, and then I saw two girls from my office who told me not to go back there. I asked what had happened, and they said they had heard gunshots and now everyone is running.
'City of London police officers and paramedics told us, 'You need to go that way, do not go near London Bridge, run that way'.
'Everyone was running, so then we came to where the Sky Garden building is and the security guards let everyone in. We're sat in the foyer of this building, and everyone is running outside.
'Now everyone is being let out of this building but they're saying you cannot walk back towards London Bridge, go towards Liverpool Street.'
British Transport Police said London Bridge station has been closed.
The force tweeted: 'We are aware of an incident at London Bridge and are assisting our colleagues at the Metropolitan Police.
'London Bridge station is currently closed and trains are none stopping. Please check with the Metropolitan Police for further updates
