IPOH: The ashes of Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Chin Peng have been brought back and scattered at two locations in Perak, says the leader of the committee handling his remains.

Chai Kan Fook said at a press conference on Tuesday (Nov 26) that Chin Peng's remains were brought back on Sept 16 and were scattered at a hillside near Chemor and at sea, about 3km from Lumut.

"We held a ceremony here on the same day. A truck carrying the ashes also returned to his hometown in Sitiawan, where he passed by his ancestral home and parents' burial ground," said Chai.

Chai said they did not make any prior announcement on the matter as they did not want to cause any issues.

"We are only informing the public now just to let people know what we have done," he said.

The former Barisan Nasional government had said they would not allow Chin Peng's ashes to be brought back to Malaysia.

Chin Peng – whose real name was Ong Boon Hua – died of cancer in Thailand in 2013 at the age of 89.

He had fought a nine-year legal battle to be allowed back in Malaysia but lost as the Federal Court, on April 30,2009, ruled against his application to reside in Malaysia because he was unable to prove he was born in the country.
