PETALING JAYA (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): A 15-year-old girl died in a freak playground accident in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (Nov 24).

She was sitting on a swing for disabled and wheelchair users at a park when her head became trapped in the structure, reported The Sun.

It is understood that she was at the park with her relatives.

Businessman Azman Manan, 40, told Malay tabloid Harian Metro that the girl received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from a passer-by and started breathing again.

She was lying on the swing's platform and was covered in a lot of blood.

She was not moved by passers-by because she seemed to have broken bones in her neck, he added.

He also put a pillow under her head.

Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shanmugamoorthy Chinniah said they received information on the incident at 6.30pm on Saturday, The New Straits Times reported.

AC Shanmugamoorthy said in a statement on Sunday: "The victim was said to have been on the swing before her head was suddenly caught at the swing's steel bar.

"This caused bleeding to her nose and ears. Passers-by managed to help free her from the steel bar."

The teenager was taken to Selayang Hospital for further treatment.

However, she died in the hospital at 7.30pm on Saturday.

The swing for wheelchair users which trapped the head of a 15-year-old girl and killed her.

The swing that killed a 15-year-old girl in a freak accident is actually meant for children with disabilities below 12 with adult supervision, said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Its corporate planning department director Khairul Azmir Ahmad said in a statement that the rules were clearly stated on a signboard near the playground equipment at the park in Kepong.

"The design of the equipment takes the weight of the person and wheelchair into consideration, and is proven safe for children with disabilities.

"According to the maintenance record, the equipment has been inspected periodically and the last was in July, where it was reported to be in good condition.

"DBKL takes the incident seriously and sympathises with the victim's family.

"A thorough study on various aspects of the playground equipment will be done for improvement.

"This is to ensure safety for all users and that a similar accident does not happen again.

DBKL is also concerned that the design of all playground equipment is practical and follows safety standards, he added.

"DBKL is calling for the public to follow the rules and take care of the playground equipment for the safety and comfort of everyone," he said.

It was earlier reported that the girl was sitting on a swing for disabled wheelchair users at the park in Kepong when her head got trapped at a steel bar.

This caused bleeding to her nose and ears. Passers-by managed to help free her from the steel bar.

But she died at the hospital later.
