PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Supreme Council member Mustapa Mohamed has officially joined PPBM.
Mustapa personally handed over his membership form to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is PPBM chairman.
An acceptance letter, together with a membership card, was immediately issued to Mustapa by PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a speech immediately after, Mustapa expressed gratitude to the party leadership for accepting him into the party.
“After being an independent MP for a few weeks, I made the decision to join PPBM.
“I wish to thank the leadership for accepting me into the party.
“I will be able me to play a more effective role for the sake of my constituents in Jeli,” he said.
Mustapa said he supported the steps taken by the federal government to strengthen the country’s fiscal position and ensure sustainable growth.
“I also hope to be able to help PPBM empower the Bumiputeras and help formulate plans for all Malaysians,” he said.
Mahathir said the party had given Mustapa time to be an independent MP.
“After seeing his stance, we agree he is qualified to be a member of PPBM,” he said.
The former international trade and industry minister quit Umno last month saying the direction the party is heading is not in line with his principles.
The Jeli MP, fondly referred to as Tok Pa, had been an Umno member for 40 years.
With Mustapa joining the party, PPBM now has 14 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
