KUALA LUMPUR: Immigration Department officers arrested 73 guest relation officers (GROs) during a raid on an entertainment outlet in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, here, last night.
The department’s director-general, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali, said: “The team screened 110 individuals, including the entertainment outlet’s workers, during the raid that started at 12.30am.
“A total of 73 women, 68 from Thailand and five from Laos, were arrested. Of the number, 16 were illegal workers.
“The foreign workers attempted to escape, but were apprehended by the enforcement officers.
“All were taken to the Putrajaya Immigration office for the documentation process.”
Mustafar said four Malaysian supervisors were detained to facilitate investigations.
He said the raid was carried out by the department’s Intelligence, Special Operations and Analysis division.
After the raid on the outlet, he said six individuals, believed to be “tonto“, had followed the enforcement officers for about 30km in four cars.
He said the officers stopped two of the cars. But, the other two cars escaped after attempting to ram into the enforcement officers’ cars.
