KUALA LUMPUR: Police pursued a Toyota Alphard from Sentul all the way to Kajang in a high-speed cat-and-mouse chase which ended with gunshots being fired.

The incident began at 12.20am when patrolling policemen from the Sentul police headquarters spotted the luxury MPV near Titiwangsa Sentral and, as their suspicions were raised, ordered its driver to stop.

“The driver initially stopped near Wisma MMA, but when the policemen approached the vehicle, he sped off towards Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

“The driver pulled the same trick when the chase reached Jalan Chow Kit, and once again gave police the slip by speeding off until Taman Dagang,” said Kajang deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Sabri Abdullah.

The situation escalated when the Alphard sped through a routine police roadblock at Taman Dagang and headed towards Bukit Hartamas.

“(At that point, at around 1.30am), IPD Kajang was called in to back up the chase. We deployed a patrol team to Bukit Hartamas to assist,” Sabri said.

After numerous attempts to stop the Alphard driver failed, police resorted to shooting the MPV’s tyres.

“Despite this, the driver continued on until he reached a dead end near a fishing pond in Hartamas Cheras.

“Refusing to surrender even after being cornered, the driver tried to reverse, but was blocked by patrol cars.

“(Suddenly), three men ran out from the car – two fled into the forest and vanished, while a third headed for the fishing pond,” he added.

Police closed in on the man near the fishing pond, but he had found a metal rod and was about to use it to attack one of the men trying to apprehend him.

“Acting out of self-defence, the policeman fired a shot to the man’s legs, with one bullet hitting his right thigh,” Sabri said, adding that the injured man was then successfully arrested.

Police then discovered two others in the car – a man and a woman.

“Checks showed that the trio, between their 20s and late 40s, were wanted by police and had criminal records involving break-ins and drug offences.

“The three were later remanded to facilitate an investigation; while the two who are still at large are being tracked down,” he added.

Sabri said the injured suspect was warded at the UKM Medical Centre and is reported to be in stable condition. © New Straits Times Press
