JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old Bangladeshi man was killed in a freak accident while cleaning machinery at a palm oil mill in Sg Kanchur here several days ago.

The victim, identified as Uddin Monir, was killed after his friend switched on the empty bunch conveyor machine as the victim was inside cleaning it at about 11am on Friday (Oct 5).


Johor Occupational Safety and Health Department (Dosh) Director Dasuki Mohd Heak said the friend only turned off the machine after hearing screams from the victim.

"The victim was then taken out from the conveyor and rushed to Kota Tinggi Hospital where was pronounced dead by a medical officer.

Dasuki said DOSH had also issued a stop-work order as well as notices regarding the matter.

He added that legal action would be taken if there was a violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (1994).

"DOSH views every accident seriously, especially those involving workers, the public or property," he added.

Dasuki added that such accidents could be avoided if employers undertook comprehensive risk assessment and implemented control, including the methods outlined in the Guidelines for Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC).
