21 catwalk GROs from China detained in Immigration Ops

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 21 women from China, who were working as guest relations officers (GRO) and earning up to RM2,000 in tips daily, have been detained following an operation by the Immigration department.
Two men from China, along with three Malaysians were also detained in the operation at an entertainment outlet in Cheras on Saturday (Oct 13).
It is learnt that the woman would parade down a catwalk installed at the entertainment outlet to entice customers with their “services”.
“Customers would vote for their favourite GRO by awarding garland of flowers that cost between RM50 and RM500 each, or giving them crowns that cost up to RM1,000 each.
The women also worked as dancers and even singers at the club, he added.
“The Malaysians detained - two women and a man - were working as the supervisor, caretaker and cashier at the outlet,” he said.
The GROs from China entered the country via social visitor passes, he added.
“There were also others who used other passes, including student passes,” he said.
Mustafar said among the offences discovered during the raid were not having identification documents, overstaying, and other immigration-related offences.
“Those detained have been sent to the Lenggeng Detention Depot for further investigation.
“We will continue our efforts to curb immoral and illegal activities, especially when it involves foreigners,” he said.
Syndicates and owners of entertainment outlets are getting better at evading authorities by using communication apps and “runners”.
“They are also taking advantage of foreigners, including students, by employing them in vice activities,” he said.
