FEDERAL Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad says his portfolio has been expanded and now includes managing urban well-being.

The addition of this new area of responsibilities means that the ministry will now also oversee zakat centres, Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territories Foundation), Rumawip (affordable housing) and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), among other things.

Khalid told reporters this today (Saturday) during the Pakatan Harapan Hari Raya open house at Space U8, Bukit Jelutong.

He said even though the additional responsibilities were challenging, he would do his best to work effectively.lThe urban wellbeing portfolio was first included in the FT Ministry's jurisdiction in 2009 when the Barisan Nasional government decided that the functions and responsibilities of the ministry would be expanded to include the eradication of urban poverty through the creation of a city welfare programme.

Following this decision, the Federal Territories Ministry was renamed Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry on Nov 13, 2009.

However, matters involving urban wellbeing were removed from the FT Ministry's management after the 2013 general election and were put under the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
