JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained five local contractors for allegedly making false claims amounting to more than RM400,000.

Initial investigations showed that the suspects had made false claims pertaining to the One District One Industry and Entrepreneurship carnival programme in Segamat, Mersing, Muar, Kluang, Tangkak and Kulai.

The suspects also allegedly filed false claims worth more than RM400,000 for work at state-level Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Week which were not implemented.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 50 years, were arrested at the Johor MACC office at around 10pm on Monday (July 16).

The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a fine of five times the amount or RM10,000 or whichever is higher and a jail term of not more than 20 years upon conviction.

When contacted, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests. The suspects would be brought to court here on Tuesday morning for remand to assist in the investigations.
