Mohd Rashid and Nga Kor Ming appointed deputy speakers

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon and Nga Kor Ming have been sworn in as Dewan Rakyat deputy speakers.
Both Nga and Mohd Rashid, who are Teluk Intan and Batu Pahat lawmakers respectively, became the deputy speakers after ballot voting took place. Nga received 124 votes, while Mohd Rashid received 171 votes.
Also in the race was former deputy speaker Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee, who received 93 votes.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad proposed the names of Nga and Mohd Rashid on behalf of Pakatan Harapan.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed Ronald Kiandee's name for the post.
His motion was seconded by Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman.
Dewan Rakyat speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof then called for balloting to take place to decide.
“The Federal Constitution states that there must be two deputy speakers. We have received three names, so according to the Parliament's Standing Order, the House will take a vote,” he said.
