PETALING JAYA: In an about-turn, former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali said he was rejecting Umno’s offer to become a member of the party’s Supreme Council.

He said the appointment would be linked to his actions when he was a judge as well as the attorney-general.

“After giving it deep thought, I feel it’s not proper for me to accept my appointment as an Umno Supreme Council member,” he said.

Earlier today, Apandi, among 11 appointed members of the top Umno council, said he had every right to be an active Umno member again following his removal as the AG last month.

Apandi, a former Federal Court judge, was an Umno member from 1982 to 1991. He was also the Youth chief for the Pengkalan Chepa Umno division in Kelantan.

Apandi, who was appointed as AG at the height of the 1MDB controversy in 2015, was heavily criticised over his refusal to bring charges against then prime minister Najib Razak.

Since May 15, he has been placed under a travel ban, pending an investigation into him.

Meanwhile, in an immediate reaction, former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin lashed out at the decision to make Apandi a Supreme Council member.

“The initial appointment was disappointing. This is now just embarrassing,” said Khairy in a Twitter post.

“We need to be a credible opposition. This is just amateur hour,” he added.
