PETALING JAYA: About a thousand police personnel have been deployed to 23 areas nationwide for a new crime prevention programme called Ops Harapan.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Comm Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said the operation was another layer of protection to safeguard the public from crime.

The new programme utilises personnel from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), General Operations Force (GOF), marine police and Air wing to supplement police patrols already in place.

“It also helps to improve public perception by increasing police presence in these areas.

He said foot patrols would help the public interact more easily with policemen.

Comm Zulkifli said Damansara Uptown was one of two locations, the other being Kajang, picked for the programme in Selangor.

“All 23 locations were picked based on population density, high foot traffic and a slightly higher recording on the crime index.

“However, I would like to stress that crime overall in the country has declined,” he said.

He said Ops Harapan would run as a trial for a month before being improved.

“We will monitor how it performs and adjust it accordingly,” he said.

“More locations may be added, some locations may change.”
