Man who molested maid 4 times within first 9 days of her employment jailed

A sales manager who molested his maid four times within the first nine days of her employment was jailed 11 months on Friday (13 July).
Francis Lim Boon Liang, 49, had pleaded guilty in the State Courts to two charges of molesting the maid. Two other similar charges against him were taken into consideration.
Court documents state that the father of two children hired the maid on 24 November 2016. The maid cannot be named to protect her identity.
Lim first molested the maid sometime in the evening between 24 November and 30 November at his place. Lim was wearing only a pair of shorts when he exposed himself to her in the kitchen.
Lim then asked her to kiss his genitals. Although she said no, he persisted and guided her neck towards his exposed crotch. The maid felt she had no choice and kissed his genitals.
The maid was at Lim’s mother’s house when he molested her again on 3 December. He also guided her hands to come into contact with his genitals.
The maid ran away the following night to lodge a complaint at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) services centre in Bendemeer Road. As the office was closed then, she slept at a bus stop nearby until the next morning when it opened. MOM then called the police.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Goh Yi Ling, who asked for 12 months’ jail, told the court that Lim had abused the trust of his maid, who was vulnerable and powerless against her employer.
Lim’s lawyer, Sunil Sudheesan, said that his client had pleaded guilty to his first offence, thus sparing the maid the trauma of a trial.
For Lim, 2016 was an “extremely difficult” time as his brother died in June and his father passed away that December, said the lawyer, who asked for eight months’ jail.
District Judge Marvin Bay said that Lim’s actions were “a brazen and cynical exploitation (of the maid)… for his own sexual gratification”.
Lim could have been jailed up to two years, or fined, or caned, or any combination of the three punishments.
