KUALA TERENGGANU: The state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has slapped a Ramadan bazaar trader with RM300 compound after a customer complaint of an "overpriced" Nasi Beriani Daging.

Its director Azlan Abdul Samat said the complainant was unhappy with the meal being sold at RM13 which he bought at Dataran Kemaman's Ramadan Bazaar, saying it was "overpriced".
Upon checking, he said the enforcement team slapped the trader, in his 40's, with a compound of RM300 for failing to comply with the rules under the Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

He said that was the only complaint of profiteering recorded by the ministry since the start of Ramadan two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Azlan reminded traders to adhere to the food prices listed under the Hari Raya Price Control Scheme, which required them to sell certain items within the ceiling price from June 17 to 30.

The 20 items under the scheme included; live chicken, standard (normal-sized) chicken, super (large-sized) chicken, Grade A, B and C eggs, local beef, imported beef, imported buffalo meat, red chillies, tomatoes, imported round cabbage, whole coconut, grated coconut, shallots, imported onion, garlic, imported potatoes, mackerel, sardine and albacore tuna.

Yesterday, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said nationwide spot checks would be conducted to ensure compliance and traders who are found guilty of selling the controlled items above the maximum retail price will be fined.

During a spot check today, Azlan praised Pasar Kedai Payang traders for being helpful and complied with the rules. He urged those with information on unscrupulous traders to lodge a report by calling 09-620 4700 or 1-800-886-800 or through e-aduan@kpdnkk.gov.my.

"We hope to receive good cooperation from traders and the public during this fasting month so that consumers can enjoy quality goods at competitive prices under the Hari Raya Price Control scheme.” he said.
