KOTA KINABALU: A stall owner stumbled upon a newborn baby this afternoon along Jalan Salut.
He had a fright seeing ants crawling around the baby’s mouth and eyes.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said the owner, who was preparing for business around noon, spotted a bag near his stall, which was moving.
"When he checked its content, he saw a baby wrapped in a cloth inside the unzipped bag.
"The baby was not crying and appeared to be very weak," he said in a statement.
The newborn was rushed to Tuaran Hospital and is in stable condition.
Chandra added that the boy, however, has an infection having been left out in the open for several hours.
Police have yet made any arrest and are investigating the case under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by parent or person having care of it, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both.
