MACC nabs Bukit Aman narcotic officer over drug-ring links

KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer from the Narcotics Department was nabbed by graft-busters early this week on suspicion of working hand-in-glove with drug syndicates.

The assistant superintendent, who was based at federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman, was the latest to be arrested over graft allegations since a clean-up operation was launched by the federal police last month.

Sources told the New Straits Times that the officer, in his 30s, was picked up by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers to facilitate a probe into his alleged involvement in at least one bribery case.

It was alleged that the officer had been abusing his position in investigations against suspects in drug distribution cases for gratification.

The NST was also informed that, after arresting the policeman, MACC officers went to his office in Bukit Aman to collect evidence, and several policemen had also been called by the commission to have their statements recorded.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, when contacted yesterday, confirmed the arrest.

However, MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki declined to comment on the case.

It was reported that federal police had arrested at least 21 of their own in a special operation against rogue cops who were in cahoots with drug lords.

The operation, launched in the first week of May, saw the policemen, including several high-ranking officers, detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

Last month also saw MACC arresting about a dozen men, including two district police chiefs, in Melaka over their alleged involvement in a police protection racket for gambling dens and massage parlours in the state.
