Zaid Ibrahim press conference cancelled not due to 'instructions from top'

Royal Selangor Club: Zaid event cancelled not due to 'instructions from top'

PETALING JAYA: The Royal Selangor Club (RSC) has denied claims that it cancelled a scheduled press conference by Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pix) at its clubhouse in Bukit Kiara because of “instructions from the top”.
Its general manager Ramesh Menon said RSC members can book available rooms for social and sporting events only, adding that Zaid’s press conference did not meet those requirements.
“The RSC was notified by a member of the purpose and aim of the intended event on Feb 7.
“Since it was neither a social nor a sporting event, it was necessary for the general committee to cancel the booking in line with the club’s policies and operating procedures.
“This was therefore an internal matter and not the outcome of interventions from third parties,” he said in a statement Monday.
Ramesh said Zaid had been informed of the committee’s decision by a telephone call and formal letter.
“There was no communication whatsoever between the club and any other club member or non-club member on this matter,” he added.
Zaid said earlier Monday that the press conference, scheduled for 9.30am Tuesday, would be held at his residence in Tropicana.
The former de facto law minister, who is believed to be calling the press conference to announce his decision to join DAP, claimed that he had been told that RSC had received “instructions from the top” to cancel the event.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and national adviser Lim Kit Siang are expected to attend Tuesday’s press conference with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman.
