Puchong United Whack Defending Champion Muar BC 11-4 in the semi finals of SS Purple League

Puchong United oust defending champs Muar in the semi-finals

GENTING HIGHLANDS: Muar Badminton Club’s two-year reign as the SS Purple League champions has come to an end.

The Johor club failed to make it a hat-trick of titles after going down 11-4 to Puchong United BC in the semi-finals at the Arena of Stars here yesterday.
Puchong United have their formidable mixed doubles pairing of Yoo Yeon-seong and Christinna Pedersen to thank for – again.
With their team-mates having secured a commanding 8-3 lead, the South Korean-Danish combination entered the penultimate match against Chan Peng Soon-Lee Hyo-jung needing just one game for an unassailable lead.
Yeon-seong-Pedersen, the team’s heroes in the quarter-finals against Ampang Jaya BC on Thursday, did more than that – powering past their opponents 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4.
Puchong United had earlier gone 6-0 ahead courtesy of victories from their Taiwanese stars – Chou Tien-chen and Tai Tzu-ying – in the opening men and women’s singles ties.
World No. 9 Tien-chen thrashed former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli 11-4, 11-7, 11-8 while world No. 1 Tzu-ying brushed aside Shen Yaying 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.
Up next were the men’s doubles.
Former South Korean doubles ace Lee Yong-dae partnered Mohd Arif Abdul Latif to score a hard-fought 11-19, 11-5, 7-11, 9-11, 8-7 win over Lim Khim Wah-Tan Chee Tean to put Muar back in the hunt – and delay Puchong’s celebration.
But it didn’t matter as Yeon-seong-Pedersen made sure of victory.
“It has been two really good days for us, everyone played so well and I’m thrilled to be in the final,” said Pedersen.
Muar took the loss in their stride, vowing to come back stronger next season.
Coach Nova Armad said: “Puchong United were clearly the better side. We’re very disappointed at not being able to defend our title, but the players gave their best ... credit to all of them.
“We aim to win back the title next year.”
