Matchweek 23
With Chelsea’s gap at the top of the table potentially extending to 11 points by the end of the evening, Arsenal knew they had to get a result.
They started in the worst possible fashion, as after ten minutes Younes Kaboul’s free-kick was deflected in off an Arsenal defender.
Just three minutes later, Watford took a shock 2-0 lead as Etienne Capoue burst forward beating two players, before his shot was saved by Petr Cech but fell to Troy Deeney who slotted in.
Alex Iwobi pulled one back Arsenal after 58 minutes, volleying in after Alexis Sanchez had beaten his man and chipped a cross to the back post.
Antonio Conte’s side failed to take advantage of Arsenal and Spurs dropping points as they were held at Anfield.
Chelsea took the lead after 24 minutes; Eden Hazard had been brought down and Chelsea had a free-kick 25 yards out. David Luiz hit one of his trademark dipping strikes that clipped the inside of the post and hit the back of the net.
Keeper Simon Mingolet appeared to still be organising his defence when the Brazilian took his kick, and watched as the ball sailed past him.
Liverpool were level just before the hour when Jordan Henderson’s diagonal ball found an unmarked James Milner on the left who headed the ball back to Georginio Wijnaldum who, himself, headed the ball past Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea had a chance to take the three points when Diego Costa was fouled by Joel Matip. The striker stepped up to take the kick but Mignolet saved it low to his right.
Spurs go above Arsenal into second on goal difference after they were held at the Stadium of Light by Sunderland in a goalless draw.
Crystal Palace won their first Premier League game under Sam Allardyce as they won away at Bournemouth 2-0 thanks to goals from Scott Dann and Christian Benteke.
