Jamal remanded for two days

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos has been detained in connection with alleged incidents of violence associated with the anti-Bersih Red Shirts group, said Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh.
The Bukit Aman CID director confirmed that the Sungai Besar Umno division chief was detained by CID officers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday.
“He was detained to assist investigations into the violent incidents in Teluk Intan and Sabak Bernam involving anti-Bersih supporters.
“Both incidents occurred during the Bersih convoy,” he said when contacted.
Meanwhile, Gerakan Merah V2 legal adviser Mohd Imran Tamrin said Jamal had been remanded for two days following the arrest.
“He was remanded in connection with several police reports lodged against him,” he said.
“Jamal is being investigated under Section 500 and 503 of the Penal Code for defamation and criminal intimidation as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.”
Mohd Imran said Jamal would be held at the Dang Wangi police lock-up.
Umno Youth exco member Datuk Armand Abu Hanifah, who was present outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, urged police to be fair and called for the arrests of Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah and former Bersih co-chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan as well.
“We urge the police to also arrest Bersih members as they are also responsible for acts of provocation as they went on with the convoy without permits,” he said, urging the police to be fair.
He added that as a lawyer herself, Ambiga should know that action could be taken against her for organising the convoy without permits.
Earlier when contacted, Jamal claimed that he was detained at about 8.30am after arriving from Dubai.
On Oct 11, a police report was lodged against Jamal over a Facebook post allegedly threatening a repeat of the May 13, 1969 racial riots.
He has since denied that the post was made by him and said it came from a fake account.
Several other police reports have also been lodged against him and the Red Shirts.
