KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed woman cried in a magistrate’s court while waiting to be charged with neglecting her seven-month-old son.

Kaw Mei Yen sobbed and kept turning to look at her family members in the public gallery while waiting for her charges to be read.

Kaw, 35, later pleaded not guilty to neglecting her seven-month son, Cheah Kai Wen, who died while under her care.

She was said to have committed the offence at an apartment unit in Taman Sri Sinar in Kepong between July 26 and Sept 19.



If convicted, she could be fined a maximum of RM20,000 or jailed up to 10 years or both under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Kaw also claimed trial to inges­ting amphetamine at the Narcotics Criminal Investigations Division’s office in Sentul during a urine test on Sept 28.

If found guilty, she could be fined a maximum RM5,000 or jailed up to two years under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zikri Jaafar asked the court to deny bail, saying that the offence under the Child Act was non-bailable.

He said if the court wanted to use its discretion to grant bail, the amount should be higher and it should also impose additional bail conditions for her release.

Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly allowed RM20,000 bail in one surety for the first charge and RM5,000 for the drug charge.

She also ordered Kaw to report to the nearest police station once a month until disposal of the case and surrender her travel documents to the court.

According to reports, police discovered the bodies of a three-year-old girl and her seven-month-old brother stuffed in two plastic containers in an apartment.

Their father was also found dead in the apartment.

Cheah Kai Sze and her younger brother Kai Wen were found wrapped in large plastic bags in a room at the Nova 2 apartment.

Their father Cheah Hing Soon, 34, was found sprawled in the master bedroom.

Kaw was said to have called her father-in-law to inform him about the death of her husband.

They then contacted an underta­ker who advised them to lodge a police report.

It was only when the police arrived at the apartment that they found the bodies of both children.

In a related matter, Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said the police were still waiting for the toxi­cology report on Hing Soon and Kai Sze to decide on the next course of action in the case.
