KOTA BARU: Five days into Ramadan, 31 Muslim women in the state have been hauled up for not wearing a tudung or for dressing in a tight outfit.

Twenty-four of them were let off with a warning while the rest were sent for counselling, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Quoting Kelantan Islamic Affairs Department enforcement chief Mohd Fadzuli Mohd Zain, the daily said the women were caught during an operation, Ops Aurat.

According to the daily, the operation would be conducted throughout the entire fasting month.

Mohd Fadzuli said that in Kelantan, Muslim women must cover up and this included wearing headscarves and not putting on tight clothes.

Department director Datuk Che Mohd Rahim Jusoh said the operation was aimed at educating Muslims in the state to respect Islamic rules.

Those convicted of indecent behaviour under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code 1985 would face a fine of up to RM1,000 or up to six months in jail, or both, he said.

He said those convicted of eating or smoking during Ramadan could be fined a maximum of RM500 or jailed for up to three months.
